Today is gift day at school and these are the simple little teacher gifts we will be handing out. Hand warmers. I love these, one because they work, and two because I had everything on hand to make them. Here is what you need:
Fleece or Felt (and fabric will work but one that doesn't fray is easiest)
Embroidery floss
Needle, Pins
Rice
Start by cutting out your shape. I did hearts but you could do any shape (think of what shape dies you have at home, if you want to be super speedy about the cutting.) you will need two cuts per hand, so 4
total to make one gift. Pin them together.
Next cut a long piece of embroidery floss (measure around your shape 2-1/2 times and that should be plenty) Tie a hole in the thread about 3" in. This will leave you a tail to tie a bow when you finish stitching.
The stitching is the time consuming part. But it is simple, I promise. Any stitch you know how to do will hold the rice in. I did a whip-stitch. Pretty easy and fun looking. Don't worry if your stitches aren't perfect. Mine aren't and it adds to the look;)
When you are about 80% done, fill with rice.
Warning: It may get messy (as in rice every-freaking-where!)
Use your fingers to open the heart up into a pocket and make a paper funnel to fill.
Finish by tying a bow. And give them a test run if you want. 30 seconds in the microwave and they are nice and toasty.

Very cute! What a wonderful idea! TFS! ~Chan ^_^
ReplyDeleteOh how neat. I made a bunch of these hearts last year but never thought of them as hand warmers. I am so stealing this idea. Thanks. It would make a good winter project as well. (Valentines Day)
